Moonfire
Moonfire was founded in 2019 by Mattias Ljungman, with a mission to build the most compelling and best performing early stage fund in Europe.
About
Moonfire was founded to take advantage of the gap in the European market to create a powerful pan-European franchise focused on the first institutional round of capital into startups. Mattias founded Moonfire to help founders at the very start of their journeys to create the right foundations for exponential growth.
Mattias formerly co-founded Atomico alongside Niklas Zennström in 2006. Atomico is regarded as one of the leading venture capital firms in Europe - Fund V closed on $820m and brought AUM to $2.7bn. Southern Right Capital have a long relationship with Mattias and worked alongside him at Atomico.
3 Reasons Why We’re Partnered with Moonfire
The data shows that European Seed is underfunded
European Seed has not received the same attention as it has in the US and China. In the US, it’s easy to name 10 or more Seed funds that have had a big impact financing the next generation of founders. In Europe, the attention has been on the Series A and B segments of the market. Today, in particular, there is the opportunity to fill the gap for another top tier Seed fund investing across Europe. Moonfire invests across Europe with a key focus on UK, France and the Nordics, and their investment areas are the future of work, gaming, healthcare SaaS and fintech. These are areas Mattias has been fortunate enough to be involved in with $billion outcomes.
The European early stage ecosystem is flourishing
The growth of European unicorns is generating higher quality seed deals. There are now over 100 $1bn companies in Europe, with a few having reached $50bn in valuation. Out of each of these success stories, there is a new generation of founders and investors which breeds further success. Mattias’ interest has always been in the earliest stages and today with a lot of downstream capital there is a big opportunity to create outsized returns investing in the formative years into the best and brightest founders in Europe.
A compelling data thesis
The team is combining traditional & data driven approaches to create a next generation venture firm (to give a few data points their sourcing engine already tracks 1.2m people, 1.1m companies and 170,000 investors). Growing AI/ML talent pools across startups and universities are generating access to experienced teams, and there is a growing interest to apply their knowledge to venture.
